History of Vodka
Vodka is one of the most popular of all alcoholic beverages. It is consumed as it is, or mixed with other components to form cocktails like the Bloody Mary and the Screwdriver. Vodka is very alcoholic and usually most versions contain at least 35 percent of alcohol. This means that vodka is definitely the drink to down if you want to get up and moving as fast as possible. Vodka was first produced in a region that encompassed parts of Poland, Russia and Ukraine and its exact origins cannot be definitively pinpointed. However, records show that Vodka production is said to have begun in the late fourteenth century. Initially it was used for medicinal purposes and in its crudest form it was an ideal anesthetic and disinfectant.
Russian Origins of Vodka
In Russia it is believed that a monk named Isidore was responsible for the creation of the first vodka. He is said to have been well-versed in the process of distillation and this helped him create a superior alcoholic beverage. The word ‘vodka’ is derived from the Slavic word ‘voda’ meaning water and this hints at its Russian origins.
Popularization of Vodka
Interestingly, it was initially low in alcohol and reserved only for the wealthier classes. Vodka was heavily taxed during the rule of Tzars in Russia and this prevented it from reaching the masses. However, by the 1860s these taxes were removed and the general public began to consume higher amounts of vodka. Vodka was also produced in Poland and used initially as a medicine. But by 1400 it had become a very popular alcoholic beverage among the people of Poland.
Though initially a rye-based alcohol, Vodka was later made using potatoes and then using grain. This made the cost of production much lower and helped popularize the beverage among the masses. Today vodka is especially popular around the world and it is usually the drink of choice at most bars and pubs. Vodka is almost completely tasteless but definitely adds a strong kick to any beverage. This makes it the ideal component to mix in with juices and syrups for a delicious alcoholic beverage. You simply can’t have a party without a couple of bottles of vodka to shake up even the dullest beverage. From vodka and coke to the more delicious and striking cocktails, vodka has proven its worth over the years. It is definitely one of the best liquors to invest in.
