Nut Flavored Liqueurs
A nut flavored liqueur is a pleasant and sweetened alcohol based beverage prepared by adding various nuts to spirits like Cognac, Rum, Whisky and Vodka. The mixture is then percolated or distilled and stored for a considerable period of time. This lends a homogenous blend to the beverage which brings out the full flavors.
Ingredients
Nut flavored liqueurs are made with various alcoholic bases but brandy or cognac is the best suited for this type of liqueur. Other than that a nut flavored liqueur will consist of one or two types of nuts like almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, acorns, peanuts, pistachio and sometimes pits of stone fruits like apricots, cherries and peaches. Herbs like and star anise and spices can also be added to lend enhanced and exotic flavors to the liqueur.
Preparation
To prepare a nut flavored liqueur of almonds you need 2 cups of brandy, 2 cups of vodka, 2 cups of sugar, 2 cups of water, 4 teaspoons of almond extract and a pinch of star anise. Add the sugar to the water in a heavy saucepan and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes till the mixture takes on a consistency of syrup. Cool the syrup to room temperature and add the brandy vodka, almond extract and star anise powder. Stir in the ingredients properly and pour the mixture into glass bottles with stoppers. Store the bottles in a cool dry place, away from sunlight, for at least a month, to get the right flavors of the liqueur.
How to Serve
Nut flavored liqueurs can be served chilled and on the rocks like other liqueurs but these liqueurs are used more often to enhance the flavor of cocktails. A nut flavored liqueur can also be added to a mug of cappuccino or it can be used to lace an ice cream. These liqueurs are also used as an ingredient in cakes.
Types of Nut Flavored Liqueurs
Some of the more popular nut flavored liqueurs are almond liqueur which is a brandy or vodka based liqueur with almond extract and is best used to enhance the flavor in a cup of coffee or an ice cream. Amaretto is a brandy based almond liqueur to which apricot pits are added. This liqueur goes well with chocolate, coffee and fruits. Crème d’amande is an almond crème liqueur and crème de noix is a walnut crème liqueur. Walnut liqueur is made from walnut extracts with a brandy or vodka base and Frangelico is a liqueur made from walnut extracts in brandy.
