What are liqueurs?
People are constantly experimenting with the drinks they serve at their parties. Liqueurs are not as strong as regular alcohol, which makes them the perfect drink when you’re hosting friendly parties. Before the party, they pep you up and work as appetizers. After the party, they help you digest the meal. Drink it with coffee or cream, make cocktails with it or just have it with ice, the taste is fantastic anyhow. Furthermore, it won’t give you a hangover the next morning because of its low alcohol content.
Liqueurs are sweet and creamy, sugar containing alcoholic beverages made by distillation of alcohol with various flavors like herbs, fruits, nuts and spices. The word liqueur comes from the Latin word ‘liquifacere’ that means ‘to liquefy’. The drink dates back to 13th century when it was made in Italy, prepared as herbal medicines by monks. Today, liqueurs are used in desserts – served with them or after them and they are also used in cooking. Innovative layered drinks are prepared by floating liqueurs of different colors in layers. Each of the liqueurs is slowly added to the glass using a glass rod to maintain the density of each of the drink used. Some popular liqueurs are listed below.
Chocolate Liqueur
If the name is any indicator, it tastes like chocolate. Made of cream, it is syrupy and contains a lot of sugar. There are two versions available for this drink – one which is made from white chocolate and the other one prepared from dark chocolate. Like, the Godiva liqueur is prepared by using Godiva Chocolatier.
Amaretto
Amaretto is an Italian liqueur which is generally sweet. It can be served with cola or juice, neat or with ice. The basic ingredients of this drink are apricots or almonds, sometimes both and various other added flavors. Amaretto is also used to make Alabama Slammer which also contains sloe gin.
Butterscotch Liqueur
This drink tastes like butterscotch candy. So, if you like the candies, this liqueur would definitely work for you. It is prepared using butter and brown sugar – fairly simple but full of flavor nonetheless. It also referred to as Buttershots.
Herbal Liqueur
Herbs are very often used to make liqueurs. Jagermeister, for instance, is produced using 50 different herbs. Irish Mist and Yukon Jack are liqueurs made using whiskey, herbs and honey. Sloe gin is made by infusing gin with berries and sugar giving it a sloe berries flavor and red color.
There’s just one thing you should remember while buying a liqueur for your own party or taking it for someone else’s – it has high sugar content. It might not give you a kick like alcohols but too much consumption of the sweetness might give you a sweet headache the next day.
